Bacon or Chocolate

Two weeks ago at the semi-regular AU Cru hangout night we pondered this question:

What food would not go well with either bacon or chocolate?

The answers we came up with were limited: sushi, watermelon & cotton candy. So, in celebration, we’re having a bacon potluck tonight. I know that there will be some fun creations including bacon brownies and bacon popcorn.

On October 30th at 6pm we’re having our next DC Cru large group get together at Jake’s place (pictured above with a possible version of the sweet Jack O’ Lantern that will be in front that night) in Arlington.

We’ll be eating dinner, laughing at people’s costumes and discussing how we can apply what we’ve been learning in the Small Groups on our campuses this semester – how do we make an impact on our city? How do we bless those around us?

Hello all!

Today kicks off our events at American University for the semester!

Small Discussion Groups – Tonight at 6:30p outside of the Tavern in the Mary Graydon Center (MGC), we’ll be holding our first small discussion group. Tonight will be just a time to get to know each other and kick off the school year. Afterward we may go get some coffee or some food somewhere just for a chance to hang out. We probably won’t have a sign to indicate where we are, so you’ll just have to look for the the group of people (take a look at my picture on Facebook – http://www.facebook.com/jayson.whelpley and you’ll have an idea what I look like).

Chill Hangout Night(s) – Coming Soon (time, date and locations to be announced). Occasionally last semester we organized hang-out nights in people’s houses, apartments, in Adams-Morgan and on the quad where we would chill and talk with optional activities that included coffee, random Kung-Fu movies, smoking hookah but it was always accompanied by good (if kinda random) conversation.

Kickoff Cookout – Sunday, September 6th 6:00pm in Arlington. AU Cru is a part of a larger group of students across the DC area (aptly called DC Cru). On the Sunday of Labor Day we’re officially kicking off the DC Cru year with a traditional cookout at one of our houses. So, if you want to learn more about Cru, if you want a good grilled burger, hot dog or some chicken and if you like lawn games and camp fires this is where you’ll want to be! Please let us know if you want to come to this and if you’re going to bring anyone. We’ll need to organize rides and we want to make sure we have enough food!

Fall Retreat - October 9-11 in Northeast, MD. You think being a part of a city-wide movement is something? There’s more! We’ll be coming together with Cru groups from Baltimore, the University of Maryland and the Maryland eastern-shore to roadtrip, camp (in cabins), sing, hear a couple of talks from someone that will challenge you like no other, kayak, climb a climbing wall, play some ultimate, get a good Indian Summer sunburn and have a huge bonfire. More information is coming soon – just mark your calendars for this one!

RADIATE09 – Winter Conference in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Okay, imagine the fall semester is already over. Now imagine Christmas has just ended and you’re trying to figure out where to go for the most rip-roaring New Year’s Eve party. How about 1,000 students from around the Mid-Atlantic region? How about staying for 4 nights in a Marriott overlooking the super-awesome Inner Harbor in Baltimore? How about worship led by one of the best bands in the region? How about seeing all of your DC Cru friends and getting a vision for your life? Yeah, you should think about RADIATE09.

Friends & fans, there’s one lasts hurrah that DC Cru is putting on and being a part of for the semester. This Friday, April 24th, we’ll be spending all day at Georgetown University for the annual Georgetown Family Day – we’ll have a table with a specific Ben Franklin quote going on to spur on some good conversations and some Kubb on the lawn to spur on some good competition. When you’re done with class come down to Georgetown to join us!

Even if you can’t make it to Georgetown Day, make sure you come out to Peniel that evening at 7:00 (also at Georgetown)!

That day is also Georgetown Family Day. We’ll be there to reach out to the Georgetown community and to play some wicked-sweet lawn games. Come and join us.

Welcome back to DC for the spring semester. We’ve been sitting and planning all week and we’re excited to get back to see you all! We already have a few things in the lineup for the next month or so.

This Sunday, January 11 we’ll have a dinner at the DC Cru Guys’ House (4830 N 22nd Rd in Arlington) with some Australian Students who are visiting us this week. We’ll pray for the semester, talk about why the Aussies are here and eat some free food – no promises on shrimps or barbies.

In two weeks-ish (January 23rd), we have our second “Peniel” event of the year. The location is still TBA, but we will either have it at UDC again or at the Guys’ House. We’ll take time to wrestle through the topic of community and how it applies to our relationship with God.

Then from February 13-15 we have the neXt Conference down in Alexandria, VA where we’ll gather again with students from around the Mid-Atlantic Region to think through the question of “What’s next?” And discuss ways to discern what God is calling you to after you’re done with school… Ministry? Marketplace? More school!? This may help you make a better decision. (We are so behind this conference that we’ll offer to pay for your conference… if you are a Graduate Student, Junior or Senior you will go completely for free, if you’re an underclassman we’ll go halfsies, you pay for half and we’ll cover the rest).
